Short Bio: Lei Zhang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Information Systems at UMBC. He is a recipient of the College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT) Early Career Faculty Excellence Award (2026) and an NSF ExLENT Award (2024). He is also an affiliate assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and an associated faculty member of the Quantum Science Institute.

His primary research area is software engineering, with a particular interest in the interaction between software engineering and emerging technologies, including quantum computing and machine learning. Lei also has over five years of industry experience as a software engineer and project coordinator. Before joining UMBC, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at Toronto Metropolitan University, formerly Ryerson University. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from McMaster University, his master’s degree from The University of Hong Kong, and his bachelor’s degree from Zhejiang University.
